Chinese literature classic Journey to the West has been adapted many times into films, TV series and animation but audiences have shown they can\'t get enough of it. So a hilarious new animated version, Adventure at Flaming Mountains, will hit national theaters on July 19th, officials said yesterday at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival.
Compared with earlier film versions based on the classic novel, this animated version features more cute characters whose personalities are closer to today\'s children. The Monkey King is depicted as naughty and emotional while his rival, the Red Boy, is brave and energetic.
The film tells the story of Monkey King and his master who are blocked by the Flaming Mountain on their journey to the West to get Buddhist scriptures. The Monkey King borrows the palm-leaf fan three times to blow out the mountain\'s burning flame.
According to the film\'s producer and distributor, it took more than three years to make the film as they wanted the mythical characters to be more accessible to today\'s audiences. The story will be more heart-warming to cultivate the virtues of honesty, loyalty and goodness in today\'s children, they said.
"We will hold special screenings of the movie at major cinemas around the country and offer movie fans film products," said Chen Yingjie, an official from Mr. Cartoon Pictures, the movie\'s distributor.
